Homework

For our homework we had to find a school magazine and analyse the content, audience and layout. The school magazine I have chosen to use is Burnt Mills, this issues was dated up to the 23rd January. http://www.burntmill.essex.sch.uk/BM_School_News/Vol_4%20issue_17.pdf
After an hour of research I found this one by searching "Burnt Mill" using Google. I found it really difficult to find one, which caused me to finally decide on using this one which is also the most recent copy of their printed newsletter online.

The content of the newsletter is to inform students and parents about recent and up and coming events, also news that is useful to students. The language of the newsletter seems to appeal more to the target audience of the students more than parents, and the writer don’t confuse the two when writing they know where to include informal and where to be serious language. The whole newsletters layout is set out well. The columns and different sections allow there to be a constant house style, with use of the same text and font size. Which is also gives a formal impression and is easy to follow. The images used are relevant to what that section is about, and there are a few which help to make the newsletter more interesting and appealing to the audience. The size of the newsletter is also good because it includes the important information and news on events that are occurring in the time period of the newsletter, allowing it not to be full with text. However this example doesn’t include a contents page, which in some ways isn’t needed because of the size of the newsletter and will encourage its readers to read what they want to, or what catches their eye or relevant to them.

The Masthead of the newsletter is informative and keeps the same house style throughout each copy of the newsletter. Including the title of the newsletter which is the school in the middle, and both logos on either side, also the date and email address where you can contact the newsletter and school.

Overall I think that this example of a schools newsletter has been helpful to me, for when I create my own. I will know what to include and how to set the layout of mine out more easily and have more ideas that will work.

  1. Excellent work! You should post images of the specific items you discuss. Anything that you didn't like or would change?
